Post work-8/23/07
Dan Barto:
This week we trained a number of perimeter players who are "big" for their positions, including Kevin Martin, Justin Cage, and Orien Greene. So we spent approximately 35% of our time this week working with them on scoring effectively on the wing catch-back down into the post off the dribble. Coach Thorpe really stressed the importance of our players utilizing their size advantage, and not just settle for jumpers, when defended by smaller players.
The videos depict two different sections of a post progression workout. The emphasis is on attacking the paint, changling rhythms and taking what the defender gives up.
Extension Jump hooks (Video 1)
These are effective as the defender is bumped back not able to hold ground.
The teaching points:
1.) Protect the ball on the fake and keep it on outside hip (do not expose for potentional strip)
2.) Extend to the rim and make sure arm is above should for the finish
Clips:
1.) Greene mid post iso
2.) Greene wing mismatch iso
3.) Greene wing mismatch iso
4.) Cage mid post backdown
5.) Cage mid post backdown
Note: Greene should find himself isolated on point guards often and will need to be patient and strong to not only create scoring opportunites but identifying cutter as well.
Double Pivot (Video 2)
The double pivot is a move scene in many mismatch/backdown situations. Players such as Dwayne Wade, Tayshaun Prince, Paul Pierce and Tracy McGrady use this footwork in conjuction with up and under type of situations. Many times the defender continues to jam the inside shoulder off the back down allowing the offensive playerto feel that the up and under will not be an option and the extension with the outside snatch hand is available
The teaching points:
1.) Know your scoring area and matchup. Who is guarding you and where is the double coming from?
2.) Full extension of the shooting arm while keeping the non shoting arm as a shield between the ball and defender.

Clips
1.) Justin Cage Double Pivot
2.) Justin Cage Up and Under
3.) Justin Cage Up and Under
4.) Justin Cage Double Pivot
5.) Orien Greene Double Pivot
Note: Cage play the "4" at Xavier. He will create problems for guards of all sizes in these situations. He will need to be prepared for the additional space he will find in halfcourt situations in the NBA .
